Leathercraft Pattern Selections:
In response to the many requests that I receive for help with patterns, I have begun copying basic chap, saddle bag, and tapadero patterns and writing detailed instructions on them so that other leatherworkers can succeed in making fine projects. As time permits, I will add leather patterns and post descriptions of them in this site. Please review my descriptive list of the patterns that are presently available and download and print the Pattern Order Blank below. Select the patterns that fit your needs, indicate your choices on the order blank, total the dollars, add the respective shipping, and mail it along with your check for the total to:

Tapadero Patterns
The instructions for #9408 are relevant for each of the 6 saddle bags described below. Instead of providing a complete description for each size and shape of saddle bag, I have included one description for six bags. The patterns will come on one 36” by 96” sheet of paper.

- #7203P A bulldog pattern designed for a laced together nose with explanation for mounting to the stirrup with saddle strings. Fits regular size stirrup and a size 11 ½ or smaller boot. - #8204K A bulldog pattern designed for applying a scalloped shield over nose and riveting with tubular rivets. Mounting explanation covers bolting tap to stirrup. - #7204P A bulldog pattern designed for riveting the nose together with copper belt rivets in a horizontal fashion. Mounting explanation is for mounting with saddle strings. Fits regular sized stirrup, and size 11½ or smaller boot. - #84094 Good Youth Tap of a bulldog fashion. Description covers scalloped front that is riveted on with tubular rivets. The front could be laced together. Fits youth stirrup.
- #7604M A bulldog pattern designed for applying a scalloped shield over nose and riveting with tubular rivets. Mounting explanation covers bolting tap to stirrup. Fits a size 11½ or smaller boot. This pattern fits OVERSHOE STIRRUPS.
- #0805B A bulldog pattern designed for applying a scalloped shield over nose and riveting with tubular rivets. Mounting explanation covers bolting tap to stirrup. This pattern fits OVERSHOE STIRRUPS and SIZE 12 AND UP BOOT.
- #7104 An Eagle Beak pattern with #20” sharp pointed tails and no hobble strap fastener at the top. Mounting explanation is for mounting with saddle strings. Fits regular sized stirrups, and size 11½ or smaller boot.
- #8605 A two-piece, open bottom tap, very close to the Parrot design of taps. The nose cover was either sewn or riveted on. This was and still is a very popular style in Western Colorado. Mounting explanation is for mounting with saddle strings. Fits regular sized stirrups, and size 11½ or smaller boot.
- #5288 Eagle Beak pattern, 23” rounded points. Designed for the hobble strap to secure tap at top. It is easy to adjust pattern either longer or shorter. - #6503 Shotgun pattern, this pattern as shown is designed for zippers. It can easily be adapted to laced side instead of zippers.
- #44 Batwing pattern, this pattern is designed for snap closure, has good balance and is a good design.
- #55 Youth Shotgun pattern for use with zippers. Fits 26” inseam, instructions included for maker to shorten or lengthen to meet your needs. Buckle in front, fringe optional. This pattern is ideal for young people showing in 4-H horse events.
- #69 Pee Wee chap Bat wing design, buckle closure, belt buckles in back, fits two to five year old youngsters. Included is a pattern for a little larger child utilizing the same chap belt and shield as for the Pee Wee chap.

- #9408 Saddle Bag Pattern: (Flat Bottom) 8 ½” wide by 9” deep with a 4” gusset, single strap closure. Instructions include suggested weight of leather to use, a descriptive sequence of instructions for successful completion and a description of how to make the accordion style gusset. - #95107 Saddle Bag Pattern: (Round Bottom) 8” wide by 8 ½” deep with a 4” gusset, round bottom and lid, single strap closure. Instructions for #9408 carry through for this bag.
- #80408 Saddle Bag Pattern: (Flat Bottom) 8 ½” wide by 8” deep with a 4” gusset, single strap closure. Instructions for #9408 carry through for this.
- #51406 Saddle Bag Pattern: (Round Bottom) 8 ½” wide by 9 1/8” deep with a 4” gusset, stitched on single strap closure. Instructions for #9408 carry through for this bag as well. Carving pattern provided. See “Gear” “The Lily” saddle bags
- #B7072 Saddle Bag Pattern (Flat Bottom) 11 ¼” wide by 11 ¾” deep with a suggested 4” gusset, sometimes people use wider gussets on this large of a saddle bag. Two strap closure. Instructions for #9408 carry through for this bag.
- #4492 Saddle Bag Pattern (Round Bottom) 7 ¼” wide by 7 ¾” deep with a recommended 3” wide gusset. One strap closure. Instructions for #9408 carry through for this bag.
- #51406 Cover flap, sometimes known as a lid. This lid is designed to convert the #51406 saddle bag into an old time style of saddle bag. The size of this pattern can easily be expanded or condensed for adaptation to the other saddle bag patterns listed here.
- #4492 Cover flap, sometimes known as a lid. This lid is designed with straight sides, two buckle straps and a dipped center front. The size of this pattern can easily be expanded or condensed for adaptation to the to other saddle bag patterns listed here.
